U.S. is First! (In Fatness)
Hippocrates once said: “ Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Now, food is causing the number one health problem in America.Obese people die 8-10 years sooner than those of normal-weight, similar to smokers, and they are more likely to develop diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Obesity is a burden on health systems, with healthcare expenditure for an obese person at least 25% higher than for someone of normal weight.
Changes in food supply and eating habits, combined with a dramatic fall in physical activity, have made obesity a global epidemic. A new study shows
- 1 in 2 adults are currently overweight
- 1 in 6 is obese
- Rates are highest in the U.S. and Mexico and lowest in Japan and Korea, but have been growing virtually everywhere
- Children have not been spared, with up to 1 in 3 currently overweight
As a side note, every Tuesday night I can’t wait to watch the television show “Biggest Loser” on NBC. I think it is a great wake-up call to all of us about the impact of obesity on people’s lives. If you’re looking for motivation, this show will definitely get you going!
